What the Bible Says About Mediums and Spiritists

by | Updated February 18th, 2023

The Bible clearly warns us to not consult with mediums, spiritists, psychics, or fortune tellers. We are to avoid seances, ouija boards, divination, sorcery, witchcraft, casting spells, and astrology readings. When we seek guidance from mediums, spiritists, or psychics we are trusting in the familiar spirits they are consulting instead of God. God wants us to look to Him alone for guidance, answers, and direction.

Watch the Message

Deuteronomy 18:10-11 – “Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist, or who consults the dead.”

Isaiah 47:13 – “You are wearied in the multitude of your counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, and the monthly prognosticators stand up and save you from what shall come upon you.”

Exodus 20:5 – “I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God.”

Familiar Spirits are Satan’s Demons

Familiar spirits are not only God’s enemies, but ours as well. The devil is referred to by Jesus as “the thief.”

John 10:10 – “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

Deceived people think they are benefiting from seeking mediums, but these spirits seek only our harm. This is why God forbids us to consult with them. Many people are tormented by demonic spirits after consulting with mediums or spiritists. When we experiment with mediums or spiritists, we open ourselves up to the demonic and give them permission to come into our life.

Familiar Spirits Know About Us

These spirits are called familiar spirits for a reason. They are assigned to us by the devil to spy on our lives. This is how they seem to know so much about us. As God assigns His angels to watch over us, likewise the devil also has his fallen angels (demons) watching us. God wants us to have a full and productive life, but the devil seeks our doom, destruction, and deception.

1 John 4:1 – “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”

Mediums and spiritists are false prophets, frauds, and con artists. They take advantage of people for personal gain or for their own self worth and ego. Some are used by familiar spirits (demons) by being deceived into thinking they have a special gift. Others know exactly what they are doing.

Both are being used by demons spirits to give their predictions, whether knowingly or because they are deceived. The source nonetheless is the same – the spirits of darkness! The devil has demonic spirits assigned to us who have a lot of information about our lives. Mediums and spiritists get their information from these demonic spirits.

Below are a number of scriptures that forbid consulting, seeking, and experimenting with mediums, spiritists or familiar spirits of any sort. These scriptures are self explanatory, take them at face value. God means exactly what He says. Read the entire context to get the full impact of each scripture.

2 Chronicles 33:6 – “Also he (Manasseh) caused his sons to pass through the fire in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, he practiced soothsaying, used witchcraft and sorcery, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke Him to anger.”
